Announcing our B Corp certification and first Impact Report

Today we share the news that we have achieved B Corp accreditation - a proud moment for our business and a moment to reflect on our journey to where we are today.

Our belief has always been that you can’t change the world alone. When we opened our first Huckletree space ten years ago we felt then what we know now; that brave outcomes and new innovation can only happen when rooted in community, and with an unwavering sense of togetherness.

But we were up against it. Workspace providers have historically valued net income as the ultimate business metric of success, and in those days, ESG frameworks like B Corp on the occupier side of the real estate industry were a very nascent idea. In 2014, the very concept of reusing and sharing office space was at odds with the office as an own-able symbol of hierarchy and power.

We’ve been on our own journey. Aside from our first building being awarded a Silver rating from SKA for its sustainability, at the beginning of Huckletree we namely thought about impact through the prism of our members; whether that meant giving community groups access to our spaces or giving those who were underrepresented or underinvested in, an opportunity. While our intentions may have been in the right place, we weren’t thinking big or brave enough.

CHANGE IS HERE

We welcome ripping up the rulebook of old business, and that includes ripping up our own. We are excited by the change in businesses being launched today, away from the growth at all costs model, towards a model that prioritises transparency across operations and accountability to community, people and planet (Vs. only shareholders) and leadership at all times, not just when it is convenient.

In the last 2 years we have focused on stabilising the business post pandemic, building incredible spaces and experiences as workers return to the offices with higher expectations than ever before, expanding our programmes to reach more entrepreneurs and businesses globally, scaling our business with 2 new hubs already opened and 4 more in the pipeline for 2023- 4, and continuing on our journey post B Corp certification.

While we have an ambitious year of action ahead of us, I’m proud that every function of Huckletree is now being assessed through the prism of impact, alongside departmental metrics. With the release of our Impact Report, our intention is to build a living reference and everyday playbook. We want to understand the impact we have, as both a business and culture of passionate people, on our members, our ecosystem, and the world around us every day.

This is a new era of Huckletree, and thanks to the work we put into building solid foundations and a connected ecosystem, we’re keenly taking the challenge on.

Onwards,

Gaby
